Racing Section

D gifhe National Cycle Collection presents a gallery area devoted to British Racing Stars displaying some of the many achievements during their racing career. Heroes such as Tom Simpson, 1965 World Champion, displays of photographs and memorabilia. The racing history of George Flemming which includes most of the events programmes which George took part in. Bicycle Magazine commissioned an oil painting in 1947 to celebrate George breaking the 2 hour 50 mile record. Reg Harris, champion of the 1950/60's, is represented by photographs and posters. The British Olympic team 1948, by displays of feeding bottles, programmes, arena tickets and of course the silver medal won by the team. The Harry Quinn cycle of Bill Bradley, the 1959/60 Milk Race Champion is on display - not forgetting the Yellow Jerseys he won. Cups and posters are also here.
The art of Tour riding is well covered by Jeremy Mallard, the well known cycling artist. and his work helps give sense to the achievements of our cycling heroes. At this point we must not forget the wonderful achievements of Billie Dovey, the 'keep fit girl' of the 1930's, Eileen Sherdon and Beryl Burton to name but a few.
